The Alabama River Region Chapter of the Gospel Music Workshop of America (GMWA) is a vibrant extension of one of the world’s most historic and influential gospel music organizations. Proudly hosted by Montgomery Sings!, our chapter exists to celebrate, preserve, and advance the rich legacy of African-American sacred music—right here in the heart of Alabama.
Founder
Rev. James Cleveland founded the Gospel Music Workshop of America, Inc. (GMWA) in 1967, in Detroit Michigan. Rev. Cleveland called together friends from across the United States in an effort to share his vision of establishing a venue for gospel music to be presented. These individuals were chosen due to their contributions in gospel music. This association formed the Gospel Music Workshop of America, with a national motto “Where Everybody is Somebody” was born.
The Gospel Music Workshop of America is a Christian organization convening annually with intergenerational global performances. which include choirs, recording artists, composers, educators, dancers, and pastors. GMWA continues to welcome all ethnicities, influences and cultures.
Since the untimely passing of its founder, Rev. James Cleveland, in 1991, the organization has continued to thrive as one of the world’s treasured music institutions. Presently, it is the largest artistic organization of its kind in the world stretching from the United States to Asia. The Gospel Music Workshop of America has been the launching platform for worldwide gospel artists. (www.gmwanational.net)
MISSION of GMWA
To preserve the heritage of gospel music in America, while providing a forum for the development of excellence in the presentation of gospel music. Furthermore, to increase opportunities for the education and preservation of gospel music throughout other music industries and the world.
VISION of GMWA
To continue the heritage of gospel music by academically preparing gospel artists for the future; to raise the level of excellence in the worship experience; and to provide a platform in which all forms of gospel music can matriculate.
Meet The Officers
Dr. Diana S. Gray
Founder/Chapter Representative
Provides the vision and strategic leadership for the Alabama River Region Chapter. She oversees chapter development, organizational growth, partnerships, and programming while advancing the mission of Montgomery Sings to preserve, promote, and celebrate the rich legacy of African American choral music through education, excellence, and community engagement.
Ms. Jamiece Gray
Assistant Chapter Representative
of Business Affairs
Oversees the chapter's business operations, financial administration, and organizational systems. She works to ensure sound fiscal stewardship, efficient management, and sustainable growth while supporting the chapter's long-term strategic goals.
Dr. Ronnie Doughty
Assistant Chapter Representative
of Community Outreach
Leads the chapter's community engagement efforts by cultivating relationships with churches, schools, civic organizations, and community partners. He helps expand the chapter's impact through outreach initiatives, collaborative programs, and meaningful service throughout the River Region.
Ms. Andre McCants Hodges
Secretary
Maintains the official records, meeting minutes, and organizational correspondence of the chapter. She helps ensure clear communication, accurate documentation, and effective administrative support for the leadership team.
