THE VISIONARY:
Dr. Diana S. Gray
Dr. Diana S. Gray, founder of Montgomery Sings!, often reflects on the day when her mother asked her if she wanted to take piano lessons. Diana quickly said, "Yes!". Just days later, Diana's father purchased her a brand new piano and placed it in the living room of her family's home. Throughout her childhood, Diana studied piano and voice with prominent private piano and voice teachers. At the age of eight, Diana began to play at the church where her father pastors. She also began to play and teach music in the local and state Baptist conventions. By the age of 17, Diana was teaching private piano lessons to individuals of all ages. After graduating from the well-known Booker T. Washington Magnet High School of Montgomery, AL, Diana dreamed to own a private music academy. After extensive music studies, six degrees and business training, Dr. Diana S. Gray is the founder and owner of Montgomery Arts Academy, Inc. in Montgomery, Alabama.
As a professional music educator and business leader, she discovered the need for a community choir that honors the heritage and culture of African-Americans. The efforts of recruiting began in April 2023 with the help of close friends including Gospel Recording Artists Dr. Rayshun Walker, Dr. Prince E. Yelder, Mrs. Guenada Lambert, and the renowned Grammy Award Winner Kurt Carr. Many singers came together in June 2023 to perform with Kurt Carr and Singers at True Divine Baptist Church of Montgomery, AL. With the support of the City of Montgomery and the honorable Mayor Steven L. Reed, Montgomery Sings!, a choral music program of Montgomery Arts Academy, is more than an ensemble or chorale. Montgomery Sings! is a movement for music lovers who cherish their African roots and traditions. "Our beloved city is rich in African-American history and there are many stories to share. Today, I join the movement of telling the stories of our culture while preserving the rich traditions of African-American choral music." Montgomery Sings! has partnered with the City of Montgomery, local museums, churches, and universities and colleges. Each year, Montgomery Sings! hosts a concert series and produces a special training seminar for all singers and musicians.
